Sustainable Reston Forum Oct 22nd, 2011

by Go Reston

RESTON, VA — Everyone is invited to a community-wide kick-off event, Looking Back and Moving Forward to a Sustainable Reston, scheduled for October 22. The event will inaugurate a multi-year effort involving a coalition of Reston civic organizations to build on Reston’s original values and make its future one of sustainable practices that will safeguard its natural beauty and environmental stewardship.  There will be open discussions and opportunities for all to generate ideas and work together.  In the first year of the initiative, residents are encouraged to “pledge” their commitment to sustainable practices; the goal of the first year is to have 12% of Reston households “pledged” by Founders Day in April, 2012.

The Sustainable Reston Forum will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods. Hunter Mill District Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins will open the forum and Michael Shuman will be the keynote speaker. Sustainability champions in the areas of “Transportation,” “Home and Lifestyle,” “Environment,” and “Buying Local” will give remarks and lead discussions.  Additionally, the 2011 Reston Sustainability Awards will be presented by Sustainable Reston.

The forum begins an outreach program that will provide the community the educational foundation to understand sustainability and what it can mean for Reston. Takeaways will include action steps that community members can take to use sustainable practices. The Forum launches the community toward its target goal: 12% of Reston households pledged to sustainable practices by Founders Day, April 2012.

Sustainable Reston is a project of the Fairfax Coalition for Smarter Growth. The community-wide sustainability forum is co-sponsored by civic organizations including Sustainable Reston, Fairfax County, the Reston Association, the Reston Community Center, the Reston Citizens Association, the Reston Historic Trust, the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, the Reston Town Center Association, and Reston Interfaith.

About Sustainable Reston

Sustainable Reston, a project of the Fairfax Coalition for Smarter Growth, has a strong vision for making Reston a more sustainable community: Building on our traditions, values and leadership, Reston of the 21st Century continues to be a diverse and healthy community that fosters stewardship of natural beauty and has a vibrant, resilient economy.  More information is available at www.sustainablereston.org.

RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER 2011 PREFERENCE POLL
Candidacy Registration Begins On August 29

RESTON, VA — Reston Community Center (RCC) is seeking interested candidates to run for seats on its 2011-2012 Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is a nine-member body responsible for overseeing the operations of the RCC.  All residents of Small District 5, age 18 or older, are eligible to run for appointment to the RCC Board of Governors. Candidates must complete a Candidacy Statement in order to have their names placed on the Preference Poll ballot. Candidacy Statements will be available at the Center or online at www.restoncommunitycenter.com beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 29. The deadline for candidacy registration is 5 p.m. on Monday, September 12.

The RCC Preference Poll is a community event held annually to select members to serve on the RCC Board of Governors. The Board of Governors establishes the overall policies for the Center and oversees its programs and budget. Board members also represent RCC at social, recreational, cultural and educational activities in Reston. Each year, typically, candidates for three seats on the Board are subject to a community preference poll with voting by residents and businesses.

This year’s preference poll will fill three three-year positions and one one-year term balance on the RCC’s Board of Governors.  Board members serve a three-year term, or the remainder of a vacated seat term. Online and mail-in balloting and walk-in voting will be available from September 22 – October 13 until 5 p.m.

The Fairfax county Board of Supervisors established the RCC Board of Governors to represent the interests of the residents of Small District 5 on issues affecting RCC. The RCC Board appointments are made by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors after residents of Small District 5 have made their preferences known in the annual poll.

For more information on the 2011 RCC Preference Poll or Board of Governors, please visit our website at www.restoncommunitycenter.com or call (703) 476-4500.

Protect the Trees

The heavy vines of Oriental Bittersweet continue to strangle trees and take over shrubs in the natural area at Stones Throw Drive. Oriental Bittersweet is one of the most invasive and vigorous weeds in Reston. Please help us eradicate this aggressive vine. We will meet at the Bright Pond Lane cul-de-sac and walk down the path on the left of the pipe-Stem driveway. There is poison ivy at this site.

For more information join the volunteer monitors’ e-mail notification list by sending an e-mail to Brian Petty, Watershed Specialist at bpetty@reston.org with “Add me to the Stream Monitors list” in the message.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE GROUP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Opportunities, Alternatives & Resources (OAR) of Fairfax County is a local non-profit restorative justice organization established in 1971 to provide opportunities, alternatives, and resources to offenders and their families. Male mentors are especially needed to help inmates at the county jail think through the choices they’ve made and guide them in making better choices in the future.

Time commitment: 1-2 hours weekly for 15 months. Mentoring begins three months before an inmate’s release and 12 months afterward.

There are many other volunteer opportunities at OAR and all inquiries are welcome. For details call 703-246-3055 or 703-246-3139, or e-mail: tcoleman@oarfairfax.org or ewilliams@oarfairfax.org.
