LAKE THOREAU WEST COVE DREDGING BEGINS
The dredging operation at Lake Anne Canal has been completed. The contractor has moved to Lake Thoreau’s West Cove area near Turtle Pond Drive, where the dredging has begun.
Using a small hydraulic dredge (similar to a vacuum cleaner), the sediments are pumped into large “geo-bags,” which hold the sediment and let the water seep out back into the lake. The sediments dry in the bags on site and then the sediment is graded out to be seeded using a wildflower mix specified by RA. The water level will remain unaffected. There will be some engine noise from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekday and maybe after 9 a.m. on Saturday. There will be some turbidity in the lake during the dredging period, but this will be about the same as experienced after a strong thunderstorm. The contractor anticipates completing the work by the end of the month.
Should you have any special needs, questions or concerns, please contact Dan Warfield at 703-435-6549 or Danny@reston.org.

WEED WARRIORS PROJECTS – June-July, 2011
Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. That is why we need warriors like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants. These fast-growing, invasive plants escape from people’s yards and seriously threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations. Please spend a couple hours in our parkland protecting our forests every fourth Saturday of each month as we help restore Reston’s forests to their natural state.
All projects:
Children under 13 must be supervised by an adult.
Please wear long sleeves and long pants if you are allergic to poison ivy. RA will provide tools, gloves, snacks and water. To volunteer, contact Ha Brock, RA community outreach specialist at habrock@reston.org or by phone at 703-435-7986.
Saturday, June 25
Glade Stream Valley vs. Mile-A-Minute Weed
Mile-A-Minute Weed is a fast-growing vine that produces many bluish berries that help it spread year after year. This vine has tiny thorns, which leave an itchy scratch. Please wear long sleeves and long pants. This vine grows in thick patches on top of shrubs, herbaceous plants and even trees, limiting photosynthesis and threatening the native plants. We will meet at the asphalt path at the corner of Glade Drive and Twin Branches Road, across the street from the Twin Branches Nature Trail. There is poison ivy at this site.
Saturday, July 23
Restore the Natural Area
The Weed Warriors will pull Japanese Stiltgrass and English Ivy that has spread throughout the natural area in south Reston. Japanese Stiltgrass threatens the native understory by quickly spreading by roots and by thousands of seeds. The only chance native plants have is the protection provided by the Weed Warriors. We need as many hands as possible to remove this aggressive grass. Please meet at the natural area on Running Cedar Road, just past Foxcroft Way, next to 11425 Running Cedar Road. Look for the RA truck.

Over the past four years the race has raised nearly $100,000 for Reston Interfaith and introduced a number of people to the growing multi-sport lifestyle of triathlons. The swim, bike and run event relies on many community volunteers, whether bike or run course marshals, transition area monitors or help with food and water. If you are interested in helping, and watching this exciting event, please email Abbie Edwards at abbiedward@aol.com. Volunteers can enjoy post-race food as a well as receive a nice t-shirt for their efforts.

Volunteering consists of four monitoring sessions of 3-4 hours each for a total of 12-16 hours per year. Training and practice are required and a two-year commitment is encouraged.
Each season, we need at least one volunteer to help us monitor two sites in Reston. If you are interested, join our volunteer monitors’ e-mail distribution list for notices of upcoming monitoring dates. LAKE ANNE CANAL DREDGING
Reston Association is wrapping up dredging at Lake Anne Canal and the area near the Lake Anne Plaza dock and fountain. When dredging is finished at Lake Anne, the contractor will move to Lake Thoreau’s West Cove area near Turtle Pond Drive. Depending on the weather, dredging should begin at West Cove the week of May 23.
At Lake Thoreau’s West Cove area we will be using the same small floating dredging machine that we used at the canal, which hydraulically pumps the soil and water from the lake bottom through hoses to dewatering bags that will be located on the wild flower meadow on either side of the path just west of the cove. That area will be regraded and reseeded with a wild flower mix. The water level will remain unaffected. There will be some engine noise from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekday and maybe after 9 a.m. on Saturday. There will be some turbidity in the lake during the dredging period, but this will be about the same as experienced after a strong thunderstorm.
Should you have any special needs, questions or concerns, please contact Dan Warfield at 703-435-6549 or Danny@reston.org.

WEED WARRIORS PROJECTS – May-July, 2011

We will meet at the asphalt path at the corner of Glade Drive and Twin Branches Road, across the street from the Twin Branches Nature Trail. There is poison ivy at this site.

When dredging is finished at Lake Anne, the contractor will move to Lake Thoreau’s West Cove area near Turtle Pond Drive. Depending on the weather, dredging should begin at West Cove the week of May 16.
In addition, the association will dredge 225 cubic yards of material, an area 15 feet wide by 200 feet long, from the end of the existing large dock located on the Washington Plaza to the existing electrical box in the lake that provides power the lake fountain. The water level will remain unaffected. There will be some engine noise from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekday and maybe on Saturday. There will be some turbidity in the lake during the dredging period, but this will be about the same as experienced after a strong thunderstorm.

What is a Silent Auction?
An auction where people (you, your friends, your family!) bid (offer a price) on a piece of paper, and whoever has the highest bid wins the item (donations from LAES families/friends, teachers, businesses).
How Does it Work?
Each donated item will have a bid sheet to record an individual’s bid/offer to pay for that item. Silent auction items will be located in one of 3 sections. A section will close every 45 minutes (12:45 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:15 PM). When a section closes no more bids can be made, and the final written bid is accepted. Winners will be announced after bid verification. The Silent Auction Booklet will be circulated the week of April 25th and at the event.
What is Being Auctioned Off?
Services, parties, gift certificates, gifts, and other cool stuff donated by teachers, businesses, LAES families, and other supporters! You can bid on as many items as you’d like. Check out the latest donations: LAES_Fiesta_donations!
