Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. That is why we need warriors like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants. These fast growing, invasive plants escape from people’s yards and seriously threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations. Please join us in removing the Burning Bush, Barberry and other aggressive invasive exotic plants we will find behind Stirrup Lane. We will be returning to this site to continue the fight we started last year against these invaders. Please park along Colts Neck Rd. or at the tennis court parking lot. We will be working along the natural path behind Stirrup Lane.

Tons of trash ends up in the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay every year from our watersheds. Litter is harmful and an eyesore in our neighborhoods and open spaces. Let’s do our part. It is amazing what a group of people can accomplish in a few hours.
Training and supplies are provided.
Stream Clean Up Site Leader Needed
Site leader volunteers are needed for the Fall Stream Clean Up
Date: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009
Time: 8:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
To sign up to be a site leader call: Ha Brock, RA Volunteer Specialist, via e-mail habrock@reston.org or call 703-435-7986.
If you are at least 21 and can supervise a large group of people, complete data sheets and walk in wooded, floodplain areas then you could be a great site leader.
Site leaders are responsible for:
- Picking up all of their groups’ supplies from RA Central Services Facilities. Supplies include: bags, gloves, signs, first aid kit, vest, hazardous materials bottle, clipboard, waiver forms, data sheets and a list of their volunteers for their site the day before (Friday).
- Attend a one-hour evening training session hosted by RA watershed supervisor.
- Arriving at their clean-up location by 8:45 a.m. to meet and register their volunteers who should arrive by 9 a.m.
- Giving a short safety speech (this will be provided) and hand out all supplies (trash bags, gloves, water bottles.)
- Leaders make sure that volunteers behave responsibly and safely.
- Leaders must have a functioning cell phone to report any problems or emergencies to RA staff or request additional supplies, if needed.
- Finally, site leaders should return any unused supplies to PWC within a week following the event, along with their volunteer sign-in sheet marked with the items their team recovered from the clean up site. These lists help us compile the full extent of trash, debris and tires collected out of the streams, and will be published on our website.
