Reston Association Board supports Lawyers Road bike lanes
The Reston Association voted to support a plan to reduce the number of lanes and add a bike lane to a stretch of Lawyers Road. In a vote of 8-1, the board said it favored the restriping project, set to begin later this summer. The board members also called on the Virginia Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit from 45 to 35 miles an hour.
The planned resurfacing and restriping will reduce the 4-lane section of Lawyers Road between Reston Parkway and Myrtle to three lanes for cars and create two bicycle lanes. The center lane will be used as a turning lane.

According to Virginia Department of Transportation, the lane changes would make the road safer. VDOT statistics indicate there were 15 preventable crashes along this stretch of Lawyers Road between 2005 and 2007.

Board Supports Development for Future Wiehle Avenue Metro Rail Station
In a unanimous vote, the Board expressed support for plans to develop the parking garage for the planned Wiehle Avenue Metro station.
In a letter to Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins, RA Board President Robin Smyers urged Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to ratify a ground lease and development agreement.

Fairfax County signed an agreement with Comstock Partners LC that gives the Reston-based development group rights to develop the Wiehle Avenue Metro station site, beginning with construction of a parking garage.

The Comstock plans include a 2,300- space garage that includes 40 kiss-and-ride and commuter bus bays. Eventual plans give Comstock the right to build offices, homes and shopping on top of the metro-parking garage. The Wiehle Avenue station, expected to open in 2013, will be the final stop in the first phase of a project to connect Tysons Corner with Dulles International Airport and Loudon County.

As a daily user of Lawyers Road, the re-paving plan makes great sense to me. Nearby residents have requested a lower speed limit in the past, but VDOT said no. I appreciate RA’s support of this!

Ah – just noticed. You have some great links included in this blog. Though I know space is a consideration, you really should also include these two: http://www.restonmuseum.org and http://www.lakeanneplaza.com (for info and EVENTS at the ‘historic heart and soul of Reston’, Lake Anne Village Center!)
