Honor Someone Special by Adopting a Recycling Bin
For a “Restonesque” way to remember loved ones, adopt a recycling bin at a Reston Association tennis court. The sturdy bin, made of 100 percent recycled plastic lumber, features a personalized, engraved plaque and can be placed at the tennis court of your choice. For more information, visit our Web site.
Need woodchips?
If you happen to see a pile of woodchips on RA property and would like them for your yard, please help yourself. Clean-up work following last winter’s storm damage has left RA with piles of woodchips. There is a pile near Hunters Woods pool, too. We also have overflowing bins at our maintenance facility, so come and pick them up during normal business hours. If you have a pick-up truck and call in advance, we could even schedule loading.
Help to plant trees in VA State Parks
Would you like to have a tree planted in a state park for free? Check out the Odwalla Plant-A-Tree program, available in all 50 states. Here’s how it works: Go to the Web site, www.odwalla.com/plantatree, enter your e-mail address, then choose the state where you would like Odwalla to plant a tree in a state park. Only one computer click per person permitted.
Odwalla will plant the tree in the chosen state. This program runs until Aug. 15, 2010 or until 175,000 trees are donated. The cost of the trees is paid by Odwalla. Should a state not accept the donated tree, the donation would go to a non-profit organization that would plant the tree.

Be the Leader: Orientation Set for Invasive Plant Management Leaders
Learn the leadership and organizational skills that will help you manage a group of volunteers as you search for invasive plants before they gain a foothold and choke out the native plants. This is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) program. The final EDRR Orientation Expedition will be held Thursday, June 17, 2010.
During this orientation, you will be taught how to survey an area of the parkland, identify the invasive plants and use a hand-held GPS unit to mark their location and log the information into a website.
There are only six open slits per session, so sign up quickly.
For more information about the EDRR program, scheduled excursions or how to become involved, contact Kathy Frederick, Invasive Management Area Volunteer Coordinator, at (703) 324-8681 or e-mail katherine.frederick@fairfaxcounty.gov. Visit the Fairfax County parks Web site for more.
Weed Warriors Project – English Ivy
Saturday, June 26, 2010
10 a.m. to Noon
For ages 13 or older
Location: First entrance to Old Trail Drive, heading east toward Soapstone Drive from Reston Parkway
Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. These fast growing, invasive plants escape from people’s yards and seriously threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations.
RA needs warriors to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants. Spend a couple of hours every 4th Saturday of each month as we help restore Reston’s forests to their natural state.
Long pants and long sleeves are recommended; there will be poison ivy. Water, work gloves and tools will be provided.
Come One & All: Reston Festival Volunteers
Be a part of Reston Festival’s 46th Birthday celebration on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 at Reston Town Center. Volunteers are needed for set-up, volunteer check-in, vendor parking, information and sales booth, concessions, children’s activities, breakdown and much more. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old.
In exchange for your volunteer work, you will receive a 2010 festival T-shirt and a meal ticket. Big groups are welcome and students can receive validation for community service hours. For more information or to volunteer contact Ha Brock at 703 – 435-7986 or e-mail habrock@reston.org.
