Meet the Candidates
Members will have an opportunity to meet the candidates during a ‘Question & Answer Forum” scheduled for Thursday, March 18, 7 p.m. at the Nature House, 11450 Glade Drive.

Ballots were mailed on March 5th with a return deadline of 5 p.m. on April 2nd. Members can vote either by mail or via the Internet. If you have questions, contact Cate Fulkerson via e-mail cate@reston.org

About the Election
This spring, Members of the Reston Association (RA) will elect three individuals to RA’s Board of Directors – one each from the North Point and Lake Anne/Tall Oaks Districts and one At-Large Director. Each will serve a three-year term. The Board of Directors determines the Association’s goals and policies, making a significant and lasting contribution to the community. Legal foundation and organization of community associations, problem solving, maintenance, rules creation and enforcement, risk control insurance, finances, board meetings, and hiring professional management. The course covers pertinent information to new board members as well as an excellent review for the seasoned board member.

Nature News & Tips
Need woodchips? If you happen to see a pile of woodchips on RA property and would like them for your yard please help yourself. We have an abundance of them from our recent storm damage. We also have overflowing bins at our maintenance facility so please help yourself during normal business hours. If you have a pick-up truck and call in advance we will even schedule loading.
Please do not feed the deer. We already have a large deer population and feeding the deer only attracts more deer to stay in our natural areas. Reston Association has a resolution against feeding any wildlife, except for songbirds. Over-abundance of deer results in depleted food and natural habitat for birds and other wildlife. Too many deer may increase human risk of exposure to ticks infected with Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. Deer transport these ticks throughout Reston.

This nine-week class will teach you how to capitalize on your life experiences by turning your memories into meaningful stories. The class facilitator guides weekly discussions of writing topics in a supportive and lively setting. At the end of the program your stories will be bound and given to you as a keepsake. If you like to write and are willing to share your work in an intimate group, this course may be for you.

Design Review Board and Covenants Committee Vacancies
There are three vacancies on the Design Review Board, (DRB). Two design professionals (architect, land planner, or landscape architect) and one Lay Member are needed to serve three-year terms. The DRB interprets, administers, and renders decisions involving the design covenants in accordance with the Design Guidelines.
In addition, there are three vacancies on the Covenants Committee. One Member each from the Hunters Woods/Dogwood District and South Lakes District and one At-large Member are needed to serve a three-year term on the Covenants Committee, which is responsible for administering the Use and Maintenance of Property Covenants and considers/determines cases concerning these areas.

Weed Warriors Projects:
Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. That is why we need warriors like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants. These fast growing, invasive plants escape from people’s yards and seriously threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations.
All projects:
Time 10 a.m. – Noon
Please wear long sleeves and long pants if you are allergic to poison ivy. RA will provide tools, gloves, snacks and water.
Adults and youth ages 10 and up are welcome. With young volunteers adult chaperones are encouraged. This project fulfills community service requirements.
Saturday, March 27, 2010 – Return to the First Ever Weed Warriors Site
The heavy vines of Oriental Bittersweet continue to strangle trees and take over shrubs in the natural area behind the houses of Fieldview Drive Oriental Bittersweet is one of the most invasive and vigorous weeds in Reston. Please help us eradicate this aggressive vine and liberate our native plants at the first ever Weed Warriors site. We will meet at the Bright Pond cul-de-sac and walk down the path on the left of the pipe-stem driveway. There is some poison ivy at this site.
Saturday, April 24, 2010 – Old Trail Garlic Mustard
Celebrate Earth Day and help restore Reston’s natural areas by pulling Garlic Mustard. Garlic Mustard is a non-native, invasive plant that spreads by seed. Each plant can produce hundreds of seeds, spreading quickly into the natural and altering the soil chemistry. Help stop the spread by removing these plants before they go to seed. We will meet at the Glade Pool parking lot, located at the corner of Glade Drive and Soapstone Drive. We will follow the pathway into the woods and head towards Snakeden Stream behind the houses. Look for the RA truck on the pathway if you miss us at the parking lot. There is poison ivy at this site.
22nd Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup
Coordinated by the Alice Ferguson Foundation and Reston Association

Saturday, April 10, 2010, 9 a.m. – Noon, rain or shine. Only in extreme weather circumstances will this event be canceled.
Join thousands of volunteers in a multi-state effort as we do our part in cleaning up the Potomac Watershed. Reston Association is hosting several sites along Snakeden Branch, Colvin Run and The Glade all tributaries to the Potomac River. Come learn about our watersheds and see what interesting artifacts end up in our streams.
Please wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring work gloves. Come prepared to get a little wet and dirty. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.
Volunteers Needed for the 7th Annual 5K Fund Run/Walk and Earth Day Festival
Date: Saturday, April 24, 2010
Location: Walker Nature Education Center – 11450 Glade Drive, Reston, Va.
Earth Day is put on primarily to promote greater environmental awareness, and to allow our community a chance to focus upon the ways we can live in a more eco-friendly and sustainable fashion. The festival will feature entertainment, local non-profit organizations, educational displays, hands-on nature crafts, fishing activities, service project planting, canoe and kayak rentals on Lake Audubon, a native plant sale, and a whole lot of fun. Below are the volunteer opportunities for this event.
5K Fund Run/Walk
Volunteer Shift: 7:30 – 9 a.m.
Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and breakfast. We need at least 15 Race Marshals.
Race Marshal (7:30 a.m.) – Volunteers are positioned along the trail/pathway. Volunteers direct runners/walkers through the course, assist runners, and shout encouragement.
There is a mandatory volunteer orientation for Race Marshals on Friday, April 23 from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Walker Nature Education Center.
Earth Day Festival
Volunteer Shifts: 12:30 – 3 p.m. and 3 – 5:30 p.m.
Volunteers will be responsible for one 2.5 hours shift.
Volunteer Job: Hands-on nature activities, mascots, concessions and much more.

Learn about Reston’s early plans and the revolutionary concepts of the 1960s that have impacted the development of communities in America. The half-hour presentation includes an illustrative walking tour of Washington Plaza at historic Lake Anne.
Reston Historic Trust (RHT), a community-based non-profit organization, was founded in 1996 to sustain the unique history of the award-winning, innovative, planned community of Reston through the operation of Reston Museum and Shop, which opened to the public in 1997. Volunteer docents staff the museum. Reston Museum offers walking tours, community exhibits and archives, programs, commemorative bricks, and annual events such as Reston founders Day in April and the Reston Home Tour in October. Reston Museum’s shop is the only source for Reston-ware such as t-shirts, mugs, and more. Funding support for operation of Reston Museum comes from public membership in the Reston Historic Trust, donations, grants, Reston Home Tour proceeds, and shop sales.
