Is the Lawyers Road “Diet” Working?
If you live, drive or bike in the Lawyers Road area between Reston Parkway and Myrtle Lane, the Virginia Department of Transportation wants your opinion.  VDOT is conducting an online survey to learn how the method to improve traffic safety is working.  The deadline to complete the survey is Sept. 19 and you can access it here or follow the VDOT link on our home page under “What’s New.”

Reston Sustainability Awards Ceremony
Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, 7 p.m.
Jo Ann Rose Gallery at RCC, Lake Anne
Come hear keynote speaker Gar Alperovitz, a noted political economist and author whose recent books, America Beyond Capitalism and Unjust Deserts, challenge us to come up with new solutions for the 21st century. Meet the winners of the 2010 Reston Sustainability awards – your friends and neighbors who are working to make Reston a sustainable community. (This event is not sponsored by the Reston Community Center, its Board of Governors or staff.)

Lake Anne Plaza Installs Free Wi-Fi
Lake Anne is all about pure local living and this summer the area has added another layer to create a comfortable lifestyle by offering free internet Wi-Fi access to the waterfront plaza. This new community enhancement is one of many scheduled for Lake Anne.

The internet service is provided by Lake Anne Condo Association and Lake Anne resident Alec Berry, founder of IT firm Reston Tech. The Lake Anne Merchants partnered with the condo association and Berry to install the wireless network, providing residents, tourists, area workers and visitors with an opportunity to get outside and online.

Aging In Reston: A Community Forum for the Hunter Mill District
Oct. 9, 2010, 1-5 p.m.
Reston Community Center – Hunters Woods
By 2020, approximately 363,000 residents over the age of 50 will live in Fairfax County. As a result, many people are planning how they can retire gracefully and comfortably in the community they love. Residents are invited to participate in this education session about needs and services for older adults in Reston and surrounding areas, and how they can create an aging-in-place community model that best serves their needs. Learn about available services, programs and options to consider for the future. Keynote speaker is Robert E. Simon Jr., founder of Reston. He will talk about his original village concept that includes housing for everyone.

Take the survey to gauge the aging-in-place concerns of residents. Your responses will be used to shape the agenda for the October forum. For more details: www.aginginreston.org. Sponsored by the office of Supervisor Cathy Hudgins.

Help us save the trees. Oriental Bittersweet is an aggressive non-native vine that strangles and topples native trees. We will cut and remove the vines from around the trees. This will help reduce the amount of seeds produced this year. We need all the “warriors” out there to join us. Meet at the natural area next to 11284 Stones Throw Drive. There is poison ivy at this site. To volunteer, contact Ha Brock, RA community outreach specialist at habrock@reston.org or by phone at 703-435-7986.
