Stream Restoration Project

by Adam Viener on May 26th, 2009

Reston is a great place to live, and in a time where everyone is up in arms about the potential brown’s chapel project, it is also a good time to point out one of the better projects being undertaken in Reston.

The Reston Association is collaborating with Fairfax County and a private company to restore steams in and prevent further erosion in our area.  This $65M-$70M project over the next 5 years will be undertaken by Northern Virginia Stream Restoration LLC, a subsidiary of Wetland Studies & Solutions, Inc.

Reston residents will not be paying for any of the project which will be funded by companies who have purchased restoration credits in the stream mitigation bank when they have undertaken building projects in our area.

Over 14 miles of streams will be restored with this project.  WSSI cautions that the project might be messy, and a bunch of trees will need to be cut down, but that once it grows in, it should be amazing.

“This makes sure that what we see in the community is what we saw as a child. This is consistent with who we are as Restonians,” said Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunder Mill) who is excited about this project.

It certainly is nice to see projects aimed at restoring the open areas and making sure that these open areas will be available and kept beautiful for the next generation.

  1. I have started to hear from people, that this project has already been a fiasco. Can someone fill me in on what has happened?
